PET / CT Brain
Preparation
4 hours of fasting.
What you need to know about brain PET / CT
- Positron emission tomography / computed tomography (PET / CT) CEREBRAL is a safe and painless test, with no allergic reaction to the injection of the radiopharmaceutical FDG-18. After injected, the patient needs to make a comfortable rest of 60 minutes so that the medication can be distributed throughout the body, before starting to acquire images. This procedure takes around 25 minutes, depending on the type of exam.
- Next, the Nuclear Physician will evaluate the quality of these images, whether or not additional images may be requested. That is why it is recommended that the patient set aside 4 to 5 hours in his / her schedule for the complete examination.
- To understand how the exam is performed and what the necessary preparation protocol is, we have prepared the information below. Read carefully and, if in doubt, we will be happy to assist you.
How the exam is performed
- After initial assistance at the reception and conducting a clinical interview, the patient is taken to the preparation room, where blood glucose will be measured. If the blood glucose result is within the limits allowed for the test, a vein will be punctured and maintained with saline.
- A dose of the radioactive tracer is administered through the venous access and the patient remains at rest for approximately 1 hour. Then he is taken to the exam room. During the entire time of the examination, the patient remains motionless, lying on the device table.
- The approximate time for this exam (inside the device) is 25 to 40 minutes and, eventually, additional late images will be necessary to complement the procedure. The examination will also have a computed tomography scan, a phase of rapid duration, with or without the use of radiological contrast.
- The total length of stay in the clinic is approximately 4 hours, so reserve the entire period for the exam.
Important recommendations
- To perform the PET / CT examination, it is necessary to use a special medication (the radiopharmaceutical FDG-F18) whose dose is specifically ordered for each patient.
- The material used to perform this exam has a very high cost for the clinic. Therefore, the maximum period for canceling the exam without losing the amount paid in advance for the dose of FDG is 48 hours before the scheduled time.
