International Publication in Neurotology

A study has just been published in the International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology, a study by the Neurotology group of the Instituto do Cebra do RS. The research, coordinated by Dr. Francisco Zuma and Maia, is an improvement over a previous study, in which the professional suggests a maneuver to correct a change in the posterior arm of the lateral canal of the ear.

Known as the Zuma Maneuver, in reference to its name, the procedure consists of making the crystal particles that move and cause strong dizziness in patients, return to their correct place. This replacement of particles through the Zuma Maneuver had already been studied and published in 2016, but it referred to another part of the lateral ear canal, the anterior arm. In this recent study, the maneuver is also indicated for the posterior arm.

This maneuver helps many patients who suffer from a disease called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, known as labyrinthitis or crystal disease, which cannot be cured using medicines. “During the night, some particles of crystals leave one part of the labyrinth and move to another part. When the patient wakes up and moves, he feels very dizzy and dizzy ”, stresses Dr. Zuma.

Dr. Zuma is coordinator of the Neurotology group, which has been associated with the Brain Institute of RS since last year. The group studies balance disorders, both in the peripheral and central vestibular areas and intends to link teaching, research and assistance in this area of health.
