Brain Institute selects elderly people to study memory

The Brain Institute of Rio Grande do Sul (InsCer) selects people aged 65 and over to voluntarily participate in a study on the mechanisms of memory. The research is carried out in three stages: first, the Inscer team gets in touch by phone and asks general health questions. Afterwards, an individual cognitive assessment is carried out at the Institute. Finally, some participants are selected for imaging exams. To participate, you must contact us by email [email protected].

Initiative seeks early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease
The research seeks to find a relationship between imaging tests and some blood substances that can assist in the diagnosis and early detection of Alzheimer's Disease. The main focus is on some proteins that are deposited in the brain, as some studies suggest that these proteins can be found in the blood. "In an optimistic scenario, a blood test could have a diagnostic value as good as a PET test - but at an affordable cost to the Brazilian health system", says researcher Wyllians Borelli. He recalls that this study is one of the only in Brazil involving an early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, even before symptoms of forgetfulness appear: “Thus, we can use this therapeutic window to prevent the disease from advancing”, he believes.
