PUCRS São Lucas Hospital opens new Oncology Center

From this Monday (4), Porto Alegre has another ally in the fight against cancer: the new oncology center of the São Lucas Hospital of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (HSL - PUCRS ). As a result of the union of forces between HSL and Oncoclínicas, the partnership aims to expand, qualify and unify patient care.

- This means that we will treat these patients jointly and within the precepts of these two institutions - explains Saulo Bornhosrt, technical director of HSL.

To this end, they bring together all the academic, research and teaching power of the University with the assistance capacity of Oncoclínicas, a group specializing in cancer treatment with operations in more than 10 states.

- The idea is to develop a large oncology center, combining the strengths and characteristics of each institution that add up so that we can fight cancer more effectively and appropriately, in an international way - defines André Fay, doctor at Oncoclínicas responsible for the Oncology Center at Hospital São Lucas da PUCRS (HSL).

Intended for private and health plan patients, the new center has a structure of four offices, nine individual chemotherapy boxes - all with natural light, television and internet connection - and a multidisciplinary team, which in addition to having doctors from various specialties, there are still other health professionals, such as nutritionists and psychologists. Offering more comfort and privacy for patients and companions, the area plays an important role in the effectiveness of treatment, says Fay.

We deliver consultancies to society for multidisciplinary care, differentiated infusion area, highly qualified clinical staff, cutting-edge research, teaching and internationalization - says the oncologist.

In addition to all the knowledge that the fusion of the clinical staff will bring, patients will also benefit from the partnership between Oncoclínicas and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a treatment and research institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School. This will allow doctors from Rio Grande do Sul to describe and debate clinical cases with North American professionals, qualifying care and treatment.

The delivery of the new center, says Fay, is just the first stage of a project among the institutions, which aims to contribute to making the capital of Rio Grande do Sul a reference in oncology.
