Diagnosis and treatment for stroke has an overall drop of 60% during the pandemic

The scenario caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is complex and challenging. Delays in seeking a diagnosis or refusing medical attention in the face of the symptoms of a stroke can increase the risk of death and sequelae.

A recent survey by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) found a global drop of more than 60% in medical care for stroke (stroke) after the start of social isolation, due to restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. < / span>

In Brazil, the drop in the search for care was between 40% and 50%, depending on the state. Although the numbers are more favorable, compared to other countries, the situation is still quite worrying and deserves attention and care.

From this, there is a need to raise awareness about the importance of identifying symptoms related to the disease, which happens when vessels that carry blood to the brain clog or rupture, causing paralysis of the brain area that has been left without blood circulation.

There are some signs that the body gives that help to recognize a stroke, the second leading cause of death in the world. The main warning signs for any type of stroke are:

- weakness or tingling in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body;
- mental confusion;
- speech or understanding change;
- change in vision (in one or both eyes);
- alteration of balance, coordination, dizziness or alteration in walking; and,
- sudden, severe headache with no apparent cause.

The faster the stroke diagnosis and treatment, the greater the chances of complete recovery. Thus, it is essential to be aware of signs and symptoms.

It is natural for people to be afraid when looking for hospitals during the current period due to the fear of contagion by Covid-19, however, this behavior seems to neglect a situation as serious as stroke.

During an event caused by the disease, for example, about 1.9 million neurons die per minute. Hence, the need to quickly identify symptoms and seek diagnosis from imaging tests and specialized medical care.
